Precise Cafetière Recipe (start here and adjust)

    • Ratio: 1:16 to 1:15 (coffee : water) — a great starting point is 15g coffee to 250g water.
    • Grind: Coarse, slightly larger than sea-salt. Select our coarse grind option or grind at home and sieve out fines if possible.
    • Water: 93–96°C (just off the boil) for most medium to dark roasts.
    • Brew time: 4 minutes — stir gently at 30 seconds and place the plunger on top to retain heat; press slowly at 4 minutes.
    • Serve immediately to avoid continued extraction; pour into pre-warmed cups or a thermal server.

    Advanced Tips for Enthusiasts

    • Bloom for clarity: Pre-wet grounds with ~30g water for 30 seconds to allow CO2 release, then add remaining water.
    • Grind consistency: Use a burr grinder and aim for uniform coarse particles — this reduces grit and inconsistent extraction.
    • Fines removal: Let settled grounds rest for 60–90 seconds before plunging to reduce suspended fines in the cup.
    • Temperature testing: For very light roasts, lower temp (91–93°C) can reduce harshness; for darker roasts, 94–96°C extracts sweetness and body.
    • Dialling in: Adjust grind finer for more pronounced flavour and coarser to reduce intensity; change brew time in 30-second increments.

    REGULARLY ASKED QUESTIONS

    Frequently Asked Questions

We have put together some commonly asked questions

What is the best coffee roast for a cafetiere (French press)?

Medium to medium-dark roasts usually perform best in a cafetière because they offer a balanced sweetness, chocolatey notes and fuller body. Single-origin Brazilians and Colombian coffees are classic choices; lighter roasts can work if you prefer more floral and fruity acidity

Should I use wholebean or pre-ground coffee for a French press?

We always recommend wholebean and grinding at home for maximum freshness. If convenience is important, choose our pre-ground coarse option tailored for the cafetière.

What grind size is ideal for cafetiere coffee?

Coarse grind, roughly the size of coarse sea salt. A consistent coarse grind reduces silty sediment and prevents over-extraction.

What water temperature should I use for cafetiere brewing?

Aim for 93–96°C (just off the boil). For lighter roasts you can use slightly lower temperatures (91–93°C) to preserve nuanced acidity.

What coffee-to-water ratio should I use for a cafetiere?

Start with 1:16 (for example 15g coffee to 250g water). Adjust between 1:15 and 1:17 to suit your taste — finer grinds or longer brew times increase extraction.

How long should I brew coffee in a cafetiere?

A standard immersion time is 4 minutes. Experiment between 3.5–5 minutes depending on roast and grind to achieve the balance you prefer.
