Espresso Coffee Guide & Beans
Artisan espresso beans, expert brewing tips and recipes for a rich, balanced cup at home.
Espresso is the heart of many coffee beverages — a concentrated, characterful shot brewed by forcing hot water through finely ground coffee under pressure. At Beann Coffee we craft small-batch, artisan-roasted beans designed to shine in an espresso basket or a milk-based favourite. Whether you’re a curious home barista or treating yourself to café-quality espresso at home, this guide explains how to select beans, dial in your grind and extract consistently delicious shots.
Why choose BEANN Coffee for Espresso
- Artisan, small-batch roasting: Each lot is roasted to highlight sweetness, balance and clarity, ensuring an espresso cup that’s syrupy, clean and complex.
- Omni-roast philosophy: Our coffees are roasted to suit a range of methods while still performing exceptionally in espresso machines and Moka pots.
- Whole-bean first: We recommend whole-bean purchase and home grinding so you can dial in your machine’s unique parameters and keep flavours fresh.

What is Espresso?
Espresso is not a roast, bean or single brewing device — it’s a method. True espresso is produced by forcing hot water through finely ground coffee at high pressure (typically 9 bar) for about 25–35 seconds, producing a concentrated 25–40 ml shot with a layer of crema. The result is a concentrated flavour profile with a balanced interplay of sweetness, acidity and body.
Choosing beans for Espresso
- Single origin vs blend: Blends often deliver consistency, sweetness and a chocolatey base that pairs well with milk; single origins provide distinctive flavour notes and clarity. Beann’s espresso recommendations are clearly labelled by tasting profile.
- Roast level: For a premium, balanced espresso, we favour medium–full roasts that preserve origin character while offering syrupy body and sweetness.
- Freshness: Aim to use beans 3–21 days after roast for peak degassing and up to 4–6 weeks for optimal freshness if stored correctly.

Grind size & why whole beans matter
We sell a single espresso grind option, but for best results we advise buying whole-bean and grinding at home. Grind size affects extraction time and taste — too fine produces over-extraction and bitterness, too coarse under-extraction and thinness. Different machines and portafilter baskets require different burr settings; our How to Grind Coffee at Home guide explains step-by-step adjustments.
Dial-in basics for consistent Espresso
- Dose: Start with 18 g in for a double shot (adjust by 0.5–1 g to taste).
- Yield: Aim for 36–40 g out (1:2 ratio) over 25–35 seconds as a starting point.
- Time: If shot time is too short, make grind finer; if too long, make grind coarser.
- Temperature & pressure: Most home machines are preset; ensure water temperature is stable and your machine is properly maintained.
- Taste test: Adjust to minimise sourness (under-extraction) or bitterness (over-extraction) until you reach a balanced cup.
Espresso with Milk
BEANN Coffee’s artisan roasts are designed to sit beautifully with milk. For milk drinks:
- Use fresh, cold milk with proper texture (microfoam).
- Combine a balanced double shot with steamed milk to highlight sweetness and reduce perceived acidity.
- Try a flat white to showcase roast clarity with a silky mouthfeel.
Alternative devices for Espresso-like coffee
While a dedicated espresso machine provides the traditional profile, you can achieve similar concentrated cups using:
- Moka pot: Produces a bold, intense brew — excellent for milk drinks.
- AeroPress (inverted or espresso-style recipes): Good for a concentrated shot substitute.
- Capsule machines: Convenient, but check capsule compatibility with our blends.

How to store your Espresso beans
- Keep whole beans in an airtight container, away from light and heat.
- Avoid refrigeration; store at room temperature in a cool, dark place.
- Buy quantities to use within 2–4 weeks of opening for best flavour.
Beann Coffee recommendations
- Signature Espresso Blend (example): A smooth, balanced blend with chocolate and caramel notes — ideal for milk-based drinks.
- Single Origin Espresso (example): Bright, fruity notes with a syrupy finish — try as a black shot to appreciate clarity.
- Ground for Filter (Coarse): If brewing with cafetière or filter brew, choose this grind.

REGULARLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is espresso?
Espresso is a concentrated coffee brewed by forcing hot water at high pressure through finely ground coffee, producing a short, intense shot with crema. It’s defined by method rather than roast.
Which BEANN blend is best for espresso?
Our Signature Espresso Blend is crafted specifically for milk-based drinks and consistent extraction. For clarity and origin character, try our Single Origin Espresso selections.
Should I buy whole-bean or ground coffee for espresso?
Whole-bean is recommended. Grinding at home preserves freshness and lets you dial in grind size to match your machine’s burrs and basket.
How fine should I grind for espresso?
Espresso requires a fine, consistent grind. Use small adjustments and shot timing to dial in: shorter times mean coarser grind, longer times mean finer grind.
What’s the ideal extraction time and ratio?
Start with a 1:2 brew ratio (for example, 18 g in to 36 g out) with an extraction time of 25–35 seconds for a double shot. Adjust to taste.
Can I use Beann coffee in a Moka pot or AeroPress?
Yes — our coffees are omni-roast and work across devices. Use coarser grinds for AeroPress/filter and coarse for cafetière; Moka pots give a strong, espresso-like brew.
